- Depending on what color you're thinking of using, your landlord might let you paint the walls. If not, you can still add some color to the room. Swap out the boring blinds or accent them with some nice curtains in a bold shade. Consider a canopy bed to add some drama and color to the room. Or change out the light fixture with a fancy chandelier or a hanging Japanese lantern in your favorite shade.
- Since apartments tend to have smaller bedrooms, choose furniture pieces that are to scale. A giant armoire or imposing headboard might dwarf even a medium-sized room, so choose something more appropriate. Since built-ins are not an option, consider a closet organization system you can take with you. Stores such as The Container Store, Target and IKEA all sell pieces that are meant to fit together and can be easily moved.
- By the time you've chosen your furniture and done some customization, you should know your color scheme. Now it's time to choose bedding, perhaps a throw rug and accessories. For example, if you chose lime green curtains and a pink Japanese lantern for your light fixture, try to find some bedding that has lime green and pink in it and find a rug that will complement those colors. Not everything has to be the same colors, though. If you've got some fun and funky shades already, consider bringing it down a notch by adding some neutrals. Choose wall art that is soothing and reflective of your personality. A couple other touches include a mirror, some extra lighting and a chair in the corner.
