- 1). Inspect your existing starting battery. Determine if the battery terminals are on the top or side of the battery case. Look at the battery class, normally stated as a group number, which defines the battery size. Purchase a deep-cycle battery with the same group number and battery terminal configuration.
- 2). Disconnect the old battery. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal first. Remove the terminal wire and move the wire away from the battery so it cannot touch the terminals. Loosen the positive terminal connection and move the wire away from the battery.
- 3). Remove the old battery from the vehicle. Clean the battery case holder and the terminal wires to remove any spills or corrosion. Check fluid levels on the new battery if it not a maintenance-free battery.
- 4). Install the new deep-cycle battery in the vehicle. Connect the positive wire to the positive battery terminal first, and tighten it securely. Connect the negative wire to the negative terminal next, and tighten it. Start the vehicle or turn on accessories to confirm you have installed it correctly.
