- One of the most common types of eczema is an inherited condition called atopic dermatitis. It is considered a chronic or persistent type of eczema where the skin essentially becomes irritated and inflamed. This irritation and inflammation is usually prompted by something, be it the weather or an allergic reaction to some sort of irritant, and the person will generally suffer from a certain amount of itchiness to the affected area. It is most frequently seen in kids, with just over 60 percent growing out of the condition as they get older.
- This type of eczema is essentially a cause-and-effect form of the condition. What happens is that someone has an itch that would cause the person to scratch. It's a normal reaction to something of this nature. But once scratched, the itch worsens, which prompts the person to scratch it again. It's a cyclical problem that ultimately irritates and inflames the affected area, making the skin extremely itchy and scaly. It is most often seen in women, but men are not immune to this type of eczema.
- The name of this type of eczema is probably indication enough, but it is more or less an allergic reaction to something that comes into contact with a person's skin. It may be brought on by a new perfume or cologne, laundry detergent, lotions or make-up, cleaners and even jewelry. Since it is a consequence of an irritant of some sort touching the skin, it will typically be localized, meaning it will only affect that area of the body that made contact with the material or substance.
- This is a more localized form of eczema that generally affects a person's hands and feet. Usually, a person suffering with pompholyx will feel burning sensation in his hands or feet that will often be accompanied by some sort of blistering. The blistering and burning will usually be isolated to the palms or soles. It is usually brought on by a condition in the weather somewhere in the warmer months.
- This is another relatively common form of eczema that generally affects the elder population. It is characterized by both discoloration and an itchy sensation in the legs, most often in the calves and ankles, where a person may be having some problems with her circulation. This type of eczema can eventually start to blister and the sore may begin to go through an ulceration, opening and oozing.
- This is probably one of the least common forms of eczema, but will usually arise in a person who has either had another form of eczema (usually atopic) or a history of eczema in the family. When someone is suffering from nummular dermatitis, his skin will develop relatively small patches of scaly, itchy inflammations that are brought on by the same irritants as atopic dermatitis.
- This type of eczema is still a relative mystery. Though the symptoms are rather obvious (moist yellow patches on the skin that are somewhat scaly), the actual cause of the inflammation has yet to be identified, besides the genetic nature of the condition. However, there are certain factors that can exacerbate this form of eczema, which would be something similar to atopic in that the weather can play a role in the intensity of a flare up or something surprising like a person state of mind in that stress can bring on an inflammation.
