An Interview With Paul Raven of Ministry (Cont.)

RC: You keep bringing up names that I haven't thought of in forever, and I used to religiously follow anything Wax Trax or Invisible put out and it's amazing to hear all those names again.

PR: And I can't mention Pigface without also mentioning William Tucker. I loved William, and I think about that guy all the time. I often think "What would William say or do or think right now?" He was kind of a mentor in a way to me.

It was a real shame that he had to go out. That was a bit of an unexpected thing.

RC: I remember that. That happened shortly after I saw him and Chris Connelly play at the Reptile House.

PR: Oh, is that right? For "Swinging Junkies"?

RC: Yes.

PR: Right, well I worked with William just before that, too. We were putting together two different projects. We did some remixes together and also we had this project The Sons of Domination which may or may not at some point see the light of day. There's a few things we had recorded. We'd just started it when all that s**t went down.

But he really was the musical director of Pigface. As much as Martin would love to think he was wearing the captain's cap, he was really more of the Tenille than the Captain, and William actually got everybody in order and made it all happen. He's another person I kind of feel is underrated, and well, God bless that f***er. That's all.

RC: So now - Ministry. Do you really think this is the last album?

PR: Well it is if you don't count the covers record.

We're doing a record called Cover Up as well. It's a record of covers that's going to come after The Last Sucker. So that's kind of going to be the last record, but you can pretty much guarantee that Al's gonna stick to his guns with this one and he's gonna put it to bed.

RC: The Cover Up, that's another one that there's a million people working on.

PR: Yeah, Cover Up should be quite interesting because we keep coming up with more and more songs we'd like to cover and somewhere it's gotta stop, you know?

RC: How many tracks are you at now?

PR: To be quite honest, I don't know how many are there right now. I put about three or four ideas up, and you can guarantee there's probably at least 13 tracks on the record. That seems to be becoming a tradition. So that's how it's looking.

RC: And getting back to The Last Sucker, that's one that's going in the political direction that Ministry has gone in the past few albums.

PR: Yeah this record is the footprint on George's a** as he leaves the White House. That's how we'd like to think we're putting our punctuation on the statement. The last three records, including this one, we're trying to just make a point and make a stand.

I mean, I'm not even a voter because I'm not a citizen, but I f***ing live here and I pay my taxes and I think that there's actually millions of people out there that, if they could get the information and get with the program and realize that they're being lied to by both of their main political parties, that the Constitution's been f***ing trampled all over, then maybe things will change.

I'd like to believe that America comes from a history of revolution and that they could do it again.

RC: So what's next for you?

PR: What's next for me is, like I said, in October I'm going off to do a little recording with Marco and the guys in Treponem Pal in Geneva. It's looking like Mob Research is going to be coming out on 13th Planet, I'm hoping, and just gearing up for next year with Ministry. We're gonna kick up a lot of f***ing dust, I'll tell you that. It's gonna look really amazing, it's gonna sound amazing, and the lineup's looking real good, now that I'm in it. (laughs)

I think there's going to be some surprises. I'm looking forward to seeing what Al's short list of songs is looking like for the the set. I think we're gonna be surprised by some of it. I'm hoping to keep everybody satisfied with this one that'd be awesome. I mean, it's great for me because I have always been a fan of the music and now to just actually get my hands around it and do my thing with it is very satisfying. It's the most fun I've had on stage ever.

RC: Are we going to see anything more from Prong?

PR: Yeah Prong actually has a new record on 13th Planet, called The Power Of The Damager, and unfortunately due to timing and other stuff I wasn't part of it, Aaron and Montye who are in Prong now are f***ing awesome and the record kicks a**. They're going out on tour. And that's about the size of it. {p}I'm going to be out with Mob Research in Europe for a month, starting the 22nd of November, and ending in London at the Camden Underworld on December 17th. That's going to be my little Christmas party. That's our Holy City Zoo tour. Really the record's not going to come out until next year, but we got offered some shows, and the London show is going to be with Paul, the editor from Kerrang! and it's going to be some type of Kerrang! event.

So we're just going to be going out for three weeks to do some shows and get my juices flowing for February when we get started with Ministry rehearsals and I have to eat a million tacos and get drunk all the time.

So there you have it. A few minutes looking at the complex network of a member of the Wax Pack. Soon, you'll have a ton of opportunities to catch Raven on the road, not the least of which will be Ministry, touring on their final studio album next year.

The Last Sucker is out now on 13th Planet Records.
