- 1). Visit the IRS website and begin the online application process. Note that, for security reasons, you must complete the entire application in a single 15-minute session. If you're unable to complete the application in the time required, you'll have to begin again later.
- 2). Complete and submit the application for your new federal tax ID.
- 3). Save your confirmation notice. This notice is an Adobe PDF file that requires an installed copy of the Adobe Reader, or other PDF viewer, to read. A PDF viewer will also allow you to print a copy, which is useful if you need to present the confirmation notice for purposes of establishing a bank account.
