What you'll do
Through the Pre Vet Eco Experience at Shamwari Game Reserve, students interested in applying to Vet School will benefit from this uniquely designed course. You will get the chance to work in the award-winning conservation department, where you will get hands on experience with wildlife. Once you complete the course, application to Vet School will be much easier. With both practical and theory activities based on Veterinary Science and Conservation in African wildlife, you will attend vital lectures and take part in conservation activities.
While here, you will get the chance to learn and try out the various darting techniques used for game capture and immobilisation - target practice and learning darting systems are part of the course. You may also accompany the conservation team when they dart and immobilise white rhinos - done so ear notching for identification can be performed.
Real life experience
You will get the opportunity actually be a vet while putting all your skills into practice, and management of the breeding centres is an important aspect of your veterinary work experience. Here you will assess the conditions of the veld, map breeding areas, map alien vegetation, monitor the number of animals and manage all the water points.
Your accommodation during your time here will be at a student centre; it is close to the main reserve on the management properties of the conservation department. You will find comfortable twin rooms with ensuite showers and toilet facilities. Each room has a safe and storage area and every building has a lecture theatre, canteen, swimming pool, lounge and entertainment area with TV and DVD players. Three meals are provided daily and you will be able to get your laundry done once a week.
