Deck Sealing Tips

As you may already know, it is imperative to seal your deck or any other wood outdoor wood project to protect it from sun and water damage.
It can seem quite difficult to maintain a large wood project, like a deck, but with the right tools and professional tips, you will be able to seal the wood correctly, greatly extending the life of your project.
Although often skipped, cleaning your wood before sealing it is an important step to remember.
You also must be sure to pick the right brand and type of stain for your wood, and with the volume available on the market this can be a daunting task! To begin, it is absolutely necessary to clean your deck thoroughly in order for any stain to work as well as it can.
There are different cleaning products available for purchase, and most are capable of removing mold, dirt, and mildew.
Some cleaners are better than others.
Never ever use any house hold bleach on the wood.
The average house hold bleach is a chlorine bleach, which is very harmful to wood.
Bleach with chlorine will actually damage the lining, which is the soft part of the wood in between its grains, weakening the wood and making it more susceptible to damage from the rain and snow.
Instead, oxygen bleach is the appropriate product.
A bleach whose active ingredient is oxygen, like the DEFY Wood Cleaner, gently cleans the wood and removes dirt, algae, and mold without damaging the wood itself.
Cleaning even a seemingly clean deck before staining is essential because it allows more stain to be absorbed through the pores of the wood for lasting protection.
After you have cleaned your deck properly and cleared it off for staining, you must make sure that the stain you use on the deck will not cause you any trouble down the road, like peeling.
Some stains can be referred to as film-forming wood stains.
Wood stains that form a film will start to peel quickly due to the fact that the film is not permeable to the vapors that are trapped below them.
The precipitation builds up underneath the film and eventually causes it to peel, making a project designed to enhance the beauty of the deck an eyesore.
Instead, opt for a wood stain that will form a semi-permeable membrane around the surface of the wood, allowing vapors to move freely after they inadvertently become trapped while still providing incomparable protection compared to film-forming stains.
Deep penetrating wood and deck stains will enter deeper into the wood than a film forming stain via its porous surface, providing long and deeper protection from the elements when the weather is at its worst.
DEFY Epoxy Fortified Wood Stain provides pigment, deep, pore-penetrating color, as well as protection from the sun's damaging UV rays.
These UV rays can speed up the rate at which your deck deteriorates, making it more likely to incur damage from precipitation and also causing it to fade more quickly.
