I am sure many of you are familiar with the story of the Great Pumpkin.
If not, it is from the Peanuts comic strip and it tells the story of the annual fall ritual in which Linus patiently awaits in a pumpkin patch for a visit from the Great Pumpkin while all the others go trick or treating! Each year he is disappointed because the Great Pumpkin neglects to make a stop in his pumpkin patch.
Yet, year after year, Linus makes his pilgrimage into the pumpkin patch to faithfully await the Great Pumpkins arrival.
Well, I have some news for Linus! The Great Pumpkin has made a visit to my garden and I couldn't be more delighted! And he actually brought a friend with him! Here is how it happened.
Without my knowing it, I had composted and sowed some pumpkin seed in my garden.
Imagine my surprise and delight when the pumpkin decided to sprout! It was such an unexpected gift.
The moment it appeared it seemed to take on a personality of its own.
My pumpkin vine literally began to take over the entire garden! As I marveled at its beauty, tenacity and spirit, I couldn't help but think how much it reminded me of a child growing up and creating his own course in life.
Each time I would try to tenderly guide the vine, my pumpkin would decide it wanted to grow and travel in another direction.
It was gently reminding me that it had a spirit of its own and that amount of coaxing and direction it got from me, it was going to travel, grow and evolve at its own pace and in its own direction, very much like our children do.
As adults and parents, we can guide them and point them in a certain direction, but ultimately they are on their own personal journeys.
I decided to allow my pumpkin vines to act upon that free spirit and create their own path.
Had I become frustrated with the free spirit of the vine and tried to control versus guide it, I might have thwarted its spirit and life...
and I would have missed out on my two huge gorgeous pumpkins.
So you see, there really is such a thing as the Great Pumpkin! You just have to give it the time and the space it needs to become what it was meant to be.
