- 1). Adjust the radio's antenna. Experiment with the length and direction of the antenna until you find a position with improved reception.
- 2). Move the radio if it is portable. Find a place free of large obstacles. Locate the radio upstairs rather than downstairs and ideally near a window for the best reception possible.
- 3). Purchase a good quality outdoor antenna to hook up to your radio. Add an amplifier to the antenna for an extra boost on a weak signal.
- 4). Minimize multi-path distortion (signal traveling to the radio over more than one path) by using a directional rooftop antenna to pick up direct signals from the transmitter. Alternatively, construct a homemade antenna out of wires. Attach it to the radio's antenna terminal and experiment with the direction. Wrap the wire directly around the radio if there is no antenna terminal.
- 5). Select Mono on your receiver, as these signals travel farther and tend to have less noise in them.
