- 1). Remove the chain from the bike. Insert the chain into a large plastic drink bottle with 2 to 3 ounces of undiluted citrus degreaser. Cap and shake the bottle vigorously. Fish the chain out of the bottle with a piece of scrap wire and rinse it in water. This is a simple and effective way to clean the chain.
- 2). Purchase a thick lubricant with volatile solvent additive. This type of lubricant is designed to flow easily onto the chain yet last long enough to penetrate the hard-to-reach areas of the chain. Most of these lubricants come in a dispenser-type bottle.
- 3). Install your chain onto your bike. Apply lubricant on the inside circumference of the chain--the side toward the sprocket. Drip or rub the lubricant directly on each roller. Turn the bicycle's pedals backward while you oil the chain.
