How to Use Foam Board

    • 1). Make large-scale models for most any project with foam board. Make a cut list for the elements in your project so you'll know how many foam boards you will need. For example, list the height and width of the four side walls and the roof as well as any peripherals like a porch, a fence or a pool if you're creating a house. Measure and mark the foam board to the dimensions on your cut list. You can use a straight edge, a flat square and a tri-square to help with straight lines and angles and a utility knife to cut the board. Construct your model with hot glue or Liquid Nails. Brace the walls and roof of your model with vertical and horizontal support beams made from foam board or thick cardboard.

    • 2). Design a layout to display school or office projects on foam board. You can find several different sizes of foam board in your local craft stores ranging from 20 inches by 30 inches to 48 inches by 96 inches. Some boards are designed to be free-standing displays with a large center piece flanked by two sides that fold inwards. You can use self adhesive foam board to attach papers, photos and other lightweight materials, and push pins, duct tape or hot glue to attach sturdier objects. Fold the duct tape so that you have adhesive on both sides and attach it to the back of your display object and then press it to the foam board so that it is not visible from the front of your display.

    • 3). Make a bulletin board with foam board, fabric and ribbon. Cut a section of fabric large enough to cover the face and edges of your foam board plus 3-inches around the perimeter of the back. Lay the fabric face down, center your foam board on top of the fabric and fold the fabric edges over the board. Attach the fabric to the board with hot glue or duct tape. Decorate the front with strips of ribbon and hang the foam board to use it as a decorative bulletin board.
