- 1). Complete Form 5405 from the Internal Revenue Service to determine the amount of credit for which you qualify.
- 2). Complete tax return Form 1040, filling in line 67 with your credit total from Form 5405. Attach your HUD-1 Settlement Statement and Form 5405 to Form 1040.
- 3). Access the IRS database of offices that accept paper tax returns and find your state's assigned office. Every state has a designated office for accepting tax returns.
- 4). Enclose your tax payment, if applicable, and mail the completed tax return to your state's assigned office. Make sure to mail to the office that accepts Form 1040.
