- 1). Secure the area where the barbecue pit is located. Move any dry pine needles, twigs, leaves and other combustible items away from the pit.
- 2). Gather your supplies. You will need newspaper, pine needles or dry leaves, small tree branches or small pieces of split wood, dry twigs and large pieces of wood.
- 3). Place small branches or small pieces of split wood in the center of the barbecue pit. Situate them so they form a teepee shape where the base is wide and the top tapers to a point. Use enough branches so the teepee structure can easily support itself. Leave a small opening in the base of the teepee structure to place paper, leaves and twigs.
- 4). Place some twisted pieces of newspaper, dry leaves and dry twigs in the opening of the base of the teepee.
- 5). Light the newspaper, leaves and dry twigs with a long-handled lighter. Let the fire burn for several minutes until the teepee begins to catch fire. Slowly add larger pieces of wood to the fire once it begins to burn well for several minutes. If the fire begins to die out, use a fire poker to stir up the wood to get it going again.
