Plastic water globes for plants are a take on automatic watering systems. It is method to consistently and evenly applies moisture to a plant without having to remember to actually water. The amount of water delivered depends upon the soil's texture and porosity. Water is delivered through a wand or stem inserted into the soil but check moisture levels as moisture delivery varies - Purchase water globes that are attractive additions to your plants. They are sometimes made of glass but also come in plastic and are colored or even patterned to enhance your decor. The product is a hollow plastic ball with a stem on one end. Fill the ball with water and insert it into the soil. They tend to clog and the inside of the ball can get dirty, so they need occasional cleaning. Plastic globes deteriorate in time and the color fades in sun.
- Make your own. All you need are a plastic water bottle and a utility knife. The quickest method uses a bottle with a sipper top. Cut off the bottom of the bottle and fill it with water. Pull the sipper out and dig a hole near the plant. Invert the bottle and bury the sipper in the soil. The water slowly drips out to the plant.
- Maintenance is necessary. The globes can water for up to two weeks but check them as they can run out more quickly in some soils. The inside of the purchased globes will discolor and can grow mold if any introduced item gets into the ball. Cleaning these is difficult since access to the globe is just from the stem. Use a pipe cleaner and soak the globe in hot, soapy water. Rinse it out every few days to keep it clean. The homemade version is easier to keep clean since the end is open. Replace the water bottle for a cleaner system.
