Information That Should Be Included In A Resume Part 1-The Basics

Name

It is obvious that you should put your name on your resume. However, there are other things about your name to think about, other than just including it on your resume. You should give only your first and last name. It is not necessary to include your middle name(s). Also, you don't want to list your initials, like T.J. Turner, even if you go by your initials, as that would force the reader to ask you the meaning of your initials. It is better to discuss this during an interview when the interviewer asks you what you like to be called; if nothing else, it will create some small talk to break the ice.

It is not mandatory to place Miss, Ms., Mrs., or Mr. ahead of your name, unless you have a unisex name such as Cary, Kelly, Leslie, or any of the other first names that are used for members of either gender. In such cases, it is appropriate to write Mr. Cary Stevens or Ms. Kelly Johnson.

Lastly, if you are the II, III, Junior, or Senior holder of you name, and if you always write Jr. or III when signing your name, or if that is how you are addressed to avoid confusion, go ahead and include it. Otherwise, it is irrelevant information, and not needed on a resume.

Address

Give your entire address. Don't use abbreviations unless space restrictions make it necessary. If you do have to use abbreviations-like with Rd. or Apt.- make sure you are consistent. The generally accepted format for an address looks as follows:
Seth Power
11 Melrose Street, Apartment 43
Brooklyn, NY 11206

It is permissible to exclude/fictionalize both name and address if you are generating a sanitized resume that guards your identity. This is important if you are employed and professionally visible.

Telephone Number

You should always include your telephone number; very few (if any) businesses will mail you an invitation to an interview. Make sure that you include the area code, even if you have no intention of leaving the area. It is possible that your resume could end up being screened in an office in a different part of the country.

Unless your current company is aware and approving of your job search, do not list your work number on your resume. If your situation mandates, put it in your cover letter. Well written cover letters do this with a brief statement that communicates the information and establishes you as a responsible employee. For instance, a statement like this can work very effectively:

"I prefer not to use my employer's time by taking personal calls at work, but with discretion you can reach me at 202-867-5309, extension 222, to initiate contact."

If you are employed, it is completely permissible to replace the name of your current organization with something more generic.

Most telephone companies permit you to have more than one telephone number, and each number that you have can have its own unique ring. It may be a good idea to make one of these numbers your permanent career-management contact number.

E-Mail

Your e-mail address is an essential piece of your contact information. You never want to use your work e-mail address; it dramatically increases the odds of your boss learning that you are looking for a different job. Also, it has become common place for companies to assign IT workers to monitor use of company computers, and that always includes tracking e-mail and Internet usage. Using your company e-mail outside of regular business hours isn't a good idea either; the trail will still be traceable for anyone looking. You should steer clear of company e-mail and telephone usage for your job search. It can be, and frequently is, viewed as theft of company time and services. This can not only be cause for termination from your current job, it also sends a bad message to potential employers.

Your ISP will allow you to have multiple, different e-mail addresses. You should take advantage of this and create one that is exclusively for career-management efforts, and come up with an e-mail address that speaks to your profession: top_salesman@gmail.com or superscientist@hotmail.com. These type of email addresses both serve as a tempting advertisement to potential readers, as well as protect your identity.
