- 1). Put the Dell recovery boot disc in your in your Dell's disc drive. Close any windows that are open and disconnect each peripheral device attached to your Dell, except for the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
- 2). Open the "Start" menu and choose "Shut Down." Click the "Restart" option and wait for the "Press any key to boot from the CD" heading to appear on the screen.
- 3). Tap a key to load the boot disc instead of loading Windows XP normally. Tap "Enter" when the blue "Welcome to Setup" screen pops up on your screen.
- 4). Use the "page down" key to scroll through the Windows XP license agreement. Hit "F8" when you reach the bottom of the license agreement text. Highlight your Dell's hard drive partition and press "Enter."
- 5). Use the down arrow key to highlight the entry named "Format the partition using the NTFS file system." Press "Enter" and wait for the program to complete the hard drive format process.
- 6). Click "Next" and use the prompts that appear to choose your region, time, computer name, password and network settings. Click "Finish" at the final screen to restart the computer and finish the Windows XP repair installation.
