- 1). Shut down any background applications that also access the Internet. While it can be fun to be instant messaging with your friends or listening to streaming audio/video while you game, these activities will compete with Counter-Strike for bandwidth. Giving your game priority will greatly speed up your connection. If you need to browse the Internet for something while you're playing, use the built-in Steam overlay browser instead of your normal browser. You can access the Steam overlay by pressing Shift + Tab.
- 2). Join games hosted on local servers. Part of the fun of gaming online is being able to meet other players from all over the world, but the farther away a server is, the worse your connection is going to be. While it's not always easy to find a server that's close by, take the time while browsing available matches to pay attention to the server location.
- 3). Turn down your graphics settings. High-quality graphics may look good, but when connecting to a server, they can put unnecessary strain on your processor. Find a good balance between the aesthetics in your game and the ability for it to function properly.
