- 1). Use the screwdriver to loosen and remove the mounting bolts surrounding the perimeter of the recoil starter housing. Pull the recoil starter housing straight up from the engine.
- 2). Turn the housing over and place the 1-inch socket under the center of the starter assembly. Place the punch on the pin that is located in the center of the starter assembly.
- 3). Use the hammer to drive the pin out of the center of the starter assembly and then pull the recoil starter out of the starter housing. You can now replace the pull rope, spring, or both.
