- 1). Open the trunk and remove the carpet or plastic matting that surrounds the area where the rear light housing is mounted. You only need to pull it back for access to the lamps. Often there will be a screw-type fastener holding the carpet or mat in place. The fasteners can be undone by turning them with a flat head screwdriver 1/2-turn counterclockwise.
- 2). Remove any plastic mushroom nuts, pins or other fasteners from the housing that covers the light assembly.
- 3). Identify the brake light by turning on the engine and having an assistant press on the brake pedal. Turn the engine off and remove the bulb socket for the brake lamp by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it out of the assembly.
- 4). Remove the bulb and replace the empty socket into the assembly by turning it clockwise. Reassemble the housing and replace the carpet or mat against the housing. Store the bulbs safely and be sure to replace them before driving on the highway again.
