Statins are the normal prescription used to control cholesterol, but they do carry many serious side effects with them, so really think carefully if you have been advised to take them.
The normal cholesterol range should not just be your total cholesterol, you should look at the individual components of what makes up the total figure, which are LDL and HDL.
The normal cholesterol range for them should be measured in milligrams (mg) of cholesterol per deciliter (dl) and they are as follows:-
- Total = Up to 199mgdl
- LDL = Up to 129mgdl
- HDL = No less than 35mgdl
Following are 3 tips to help achieve this.
- Eat Oily Fish - Oily fish are rich in omega 3 and one of the ways it can help is by reducing the amount of triglyceride's the body produces.
This is important because not only does HDL mop up LDL but it also has to deal with triglyceride's too and the more of them that it has to deal with then there less there is free to mop up the LDL. - Ditch Fast Food - By fast food I do not just mean food that you take away from fast food outlets, but also packaged pre-prepared meals, cookies and potato chips.
The reason for this is because they contain a fat made from hydrogenated vegetable oil (trans fat) and this fat spikes LDL and inhibits HDL.
Foods containing hydrogenated oils are terrible for your health, so always check to see if it contains or has been cooked in this fat. - Get Moving - Exercise is a wonderful way to get your cholesterol in the normal cholesterol range.
However, do not be concerned about having to do strenuous activities, if you can do something like brisk walking or swimming for thirty minutes a day then that will have a positive effect on your health.
This comes as no surprise really when you consider some of them can be just as effective as statins, but with no side effects.
