How to Enjoy a 5 Mile Walk Around Stone Mountain

The most enjoyable and uplifting experience is to do the five-mile walk around Stone Mountain.
Look around and you will see all ages, sizes and genders indulging in the activity of walking.
Some may walk, run, jog or bike but the main reason is to take care of that mind and body.
Walking naturally helps you to exercise without stress.
While walking you may experience one are or all of the following things: 1.
Motivation - gives you the drive to keep going 2.
Refreshment - enjoy the fresh air and scenery 3.
Expands lungs and aerobics - energizes your body and exercise 4.
Flexes joints - helps keeps joints supple 5.
Increases your thinking processes - your brain is clearer in reasoning 6.
Gives you stamina - increases your endurance In addition to helping your body you will enjoy the scenery and nature as you go along the path.
You have a choice of three lanes: 1.
Sidewalk path for walking, jogging or running 2.
A Street Lane for walking, jogging and/or running 3.
Bicycle Lane for bicycles only.
To enjoy yourself as you walk along the five-mile path look for the circular metal markers on the ground every half mile or so and relate the sights that you see along with the particular marker.
Some people (like me) like to begin from the entrance at the West Gate.
When you begin, the five-mile marker will be under the map at the parking lot near Confederate Hall.
As you walk, jog or run you will see the nature garden trail and the natural trail or path.
At the one-mile marker you should be near the children's playground, restroom and picnic area.
Approaching the two-mile marker you will begin to see the lake and enjoy the natural setting and you might even see a deer in the late evening.
You may wish to visit the rock quarry or watermill.
Upon reaching the three-mile marker, there is vast area of picnic tables for the public and across the street is the marina with the Carillion Bell (it sounds and looks like a huge pipe organ in the middle of the lake, you may have to walk off the path a little to see it).
When you get to the three and half marker you will see Memorial Hall and the famous carvings of the Generals on the mountain, the cable car to the top of the mountain and across the street there is Stone Mountain Inn.
After passing the carvings you will get a brisk down hill walk passing the Adventure area for kids.
The next hill you come to is the longest and steepest.
Take your time and breathe slowly.
At the top of the hill you will feel some relief because it is basically all flat from here on and the four-mile marker is near.
You may see the Train passing or the "Ride the Duck" tours as you walk.
And guess what? The tourists will usually smile and wave back at you as you walk.
When you past the West gate and Confederate Hall, pat yourself on the back because the parking lot where you started is just ahead.
It can be done and you should feel rejuvenated after going five miles around Stone Mountain.
Hopefully, you will do it again next week.
