- 1). Keep hot plates, for example, a trivet, from being dragged across the surface of the stoneware to prevent scratches from occurring.
- 2). Wash the bottom with a stoneware cleaner mixture. Pour 8 ounces of tap water in a glass bowl and add baking soda while mixing the contents with your finger. Stop adding baking soda when the mixture is pasty. Apply paste to an edge of a sponge and wipe the sponge against the stoneware plate. Rinse the mixture off the stoneware with tap water.
- 3). Purchase stoneware that does not contain rough silica sand--the composition can be checked on the manufacturer's website if the specifications are not provided with the stoneware. The rough silica sand makes stoneware more prone to being scratched than those which do not have this as part of their composition.
