- 1). Learn the signs that indicate your dog is in heat so you can recognize this event quickly the first time it occurs. The most common signs include a swollen vulva, a red or brownish discharge of blood from her vagina and an increased "friendliness" toward male dogs. You might notice your dog licking her genital area more frequently.
- 2). Protect your pet from an unwanted pregnancy by keeping her away from male dogs. Don't leave her unattended outdoors or anywhere else where male dogs are present. Ensure that fences, gates and doors are secure so male dogs can't sneak in and your dog can't venture out. Refrain from going on walks where male dogs are present, as some may be aggressive.
- 3). Interact with your puppy in ways that are calming to her. Female dogs are generally anxious during estrus, and a puppy experiencing her first estrus may need extra soothing. Most dogs are soothed by a calm voice, gentle rubbing and scratching, and favorite grooming rituals like brushing.
- 4). Purchase special protective diapers or pants for your puppy. You can find these at most pet stores. These protective supplies will keep discharge from getting on your furniture and carpet.
