- 1). Take the ladder to an area that has a flat surface. Open the ladder and position it in place.
- 2). Identify which of the steps is loose. Test each of the steps with your hand. However, do not climb on the ladder to find the loose step since you might injure yourself.
- 3). Use a wrench to tighten the hex nuts on each side of the loose step. The hex nuts are on the outside of the ladder rail and secure the step to the ladder.
- 4). See if the ladder is stable or if it still continues to shake or show movement in the steps. If there is movement in the ladder, continue tightening the hex nuts for each step.
- 5). Check the ladder for stability again. The ladder should now be stable with no movement. If there is still some movement, but nothing else left to tighten, the ladder should be thrown away rather than have the possibility of someone falling off it and getting hurt.
