- 1). Drive four stakes vertically into the ground in a rectangular pattern that is 24 inches longer and wider than the diameter of your pool. Cut two planks of 1-by 6-inch lumber that is at least the length of the widest distance between the stakes. Attach one board to a stake on the inside of the rectangle, using one screw. Tape a carpenter's level to the top of the board. Raise or lower the other end of the board until it is level. Screw the board into the stake and remove the carpenter's level. Reinforce by screwing the boards to the stakes in at least three places. Repeat to position and affix a board parallel to the first. These boards serve as leveling guides.
- 2). Measure and cut a 1-by 6-inch plank that is 4-inches shorter than the distance between the leveling guides. This is the screed (leveling) board. Cut two 1-by 2-inch boards, 2-feet long. These are the handles for the screed board. Lay the screed board on a flat surface. Position the handles at the ends of the screed board so that 12-inches extends off the end of the screed board. The handles should be positioned flush with the top edge of the screed board. Firmly affix the handles to the screed board with screws, set 3-inches apart.
- 3). Pour beach sand between the leveling guides. Use a shovel or rake to distribute the sand. Keep filling and distributing until the sand bed is about 4 inches deep and covers the entire area..
- 4). Place the screed board handles on the leveling guide so the screed board touches the sand. The screed board should be perpendicular to the leveling guides. With one person holding each handle, Move the screed board side to side and down the length of the leveling guides. Fill low areas and screed again. Spray water liberally on the sand bed to settle the sand. Go over the entire sand bed with a soil-tamping tool to further compress and stabilize the sand bed. Remove leveling guides.
