The Bully Plays: The second 8 plays in the collection



The Bully Playsis a collection of 24 ten-minute plays.  As the title suggests, each play is about an instance of bullying, the effect of being a bully or being bullied, or an artistic expression of how bullying looks and feels. The plays are especially suitable for performance by mature middle school students, high school students, and young adults.

9. The Conundrum by Brett Neveu

Ken, six years removed from the original bulling event, looks back on the action of his gym class bully, Tony. He examines the situation between the two of them from an older, wiser, and more confident position in life.

Cast size: This play can accommodate 2 actors.

Setting: Bare stage in the present

10.  Downhill by Eric Coble

An instance of bullying can get passed down from one person to the next. In this play, witness how each bully’s victim becomes the bully: boss to employee, parent to child, child to a sibling, and sibling to classmate. The theme: Where and how can this downhill spiral of bullying stop?

Cast size: This play can accommodate 5 actors.

Male Characters: Up to 5

Female Characters: Up to 5

Characters that could be played by either males or females: 5
The playwright explains that the names and pronouns may be changed to accommodate a cast of any gender make-up.

Setting: An office, a home, a school, and a different home in the present

11. The Final Testimony of Henry Samson by Y York

Henry Samson goes on trial in the afterlife. Whether or not he leaves to spend eternity with a sinister character in a suit hinges on the testimony he provides about his abuse of Alice the summer before he died in a car crash.

Cast size: This play can accommodate 4 actors.

12. Flash Mob by Elizabeth Wong

A bullied girl takes to social media to express her feelings and come up with a way to ensure that her school becomes a bully-free zone. Actors personify the various social media sites.

Cast size: This play accommodates 11 actors with an ensemble of any number of actors you can fit on the stage.

13. Gasp, Farrah & Monster by José González Cruz

This play presents three different stories of bullying from three different eras. An old man from the 1950s expresses remorse about his youthful bullying. A woman from the 1970s shares how she still carries emotional scars from being bullied 35 years earlier.  The Monster, a young man who was bullied, explains how he has now turned into a bigger bully than all of his former tormentors.

14. Glorious Gail by Max Bush

Three bloggers react to the abuse of Gail who was found on a beach, unconscious, with words written on her suggesting retaliation for an alleged abortion. The bloggers wrestle with victim blaming, false allegations, and whether Gail deserved what she got.

Cast size: This play can accommodate 5 actors.

Setting: The beach on lake Michigan and three separate rooms of high school students in the month of June in the present

Content Issues? Violence, rape, abortion, and profanity

15. Happy Birthday, Heather Higby (I Am Plotting Your Doom) by Stephen Gregg

What are the costs versus the benefits of vengeance and affirmations? This play urges students to discover and spread good rumors about each other instead of gossip and slander. 

Cast size: This play can accommodate 13 actors with opportunities for a large ensemble of spies, rumors, and teachers.

Setting: Bare stage in the present

16. Her by Geraldine Ann Snyder

A group of bullies elate in how they have tortured Her and how they plan another act of bullying. They relish their sport of scorning Her and talk about how she should just go and die.

Setting: A school in the present
