Bulimia and its side effects

Bulimia Nervosa or commonly called bulimia , is an eating disorder and characterized by the constant shifts in eating habit of a person. Discerning the side effects of over eating, many people try to restrain themselves and control their urge to binge on anything they get their hands on. After a brief period of restricted cravings, these people give in to their culinary desires and indulge in gulping down all the things that they have been craving for so long. After having done so, these people suffer from feeling of guilt and low self esteem. Sometimes the feeling of self hatred is so strong that it leads to depression. Many a times these people try to overcome these feelings and undo the effect of over indulging through vomiting or purging, fasting, the use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics, and over exercising.

The most important character of bulimic person is that they would indulge in over eating at times and when others interrupt them or they suffer from some kind of stomach upset, they completely give up on eating. These cycles may continue from many times in a week to several times in days depending on the intensity of the disorder.

It is easy to discern a bulimic person and we can decipher a person to be bulimic if he or she has the above said eating disorders. However there is no coherence in the cases of bulimia. There is no evidence of relating it to any particular region of the world, to any particular group age or to any particular gender. This disorder is based on the psychological functioning of an individual and there are no connections between any two cases. Its prevalence in the affluent section is merely due to the fact that they have the resources to meet their cravings while as the poorer section cannot.

Bulimia can lead to a number of other complications such as:
Swollen salivary glands Tooth decay and mouth sores Swollen cheeks Abdominal pain with bloating Bloodshot eyes Loss of menstrual periods Weight gain Swelling of the hands and feet Acid reflux or ulcers Ruptured stomach or esophagus Weakness and dizziness Chronic constipation [from laxative abuse]
