How to Design Business Cards for Attorneys

    Using Publisher

    • 1). Open Publisher, click "Publications for Print" and select "Business Cards." Scroll through the available options and double-click one to open it in the Publisher workspace.

    • 2). Click your cursor into the first line of text on the card, which becomes highlighted. Type directly over it with your name and designation, such as Esq. Repeat this to type over the rest of the lines on the card with your company/firm name, address, cell phone number, email address and website. Add any other information such as "Law Review" or "Moot Court Competitor."

    • 3). Right-click the placeholder graphic on the card, select "Change Picture" and choose "Clip Art." Type a word or phrase, such as "lawyer," "scale," "scales of justice" or "gavel" into the "Search for" box and click "Go." Scroll through the options and double-click an image, which appears in place on the card.

    • 4). Click the "Color Schemes" link on the "Business Card Options" pane on the left side of the screen. Scroll through the color groups to find one that matches your firm or color preferences and double-click it; the card automatically updates on the screen.

    • 5). Click the "Multiple" option under the "Copies per sheet" section of the "Business Card Options" pane. This ensures you'll print multiple attorney cards instead of just a single one per page. Pull down the "File" menu, click the "Save As" option and type a name for the card. Select a destination to save the card on your computer and click the "Save" button.

    Using Paint

    • 1). Open Paint, pull down the "File" menu and click "Open." Browse to a digital image on your computer, such as your firm file head shot or a sketch of the scales of justice. Double-click the file, which opens in Paint. Click the "Select" tool, which looks like a box made of dotted lines. Draw an outline around the image you just opened, right-click it and select "Copy."

    • 2). Click the "File" menu again and select "New." Pull down the "Image" menu and select "Attributes." Set the dimensions as 3.5 inches by 2 inches and click "OK." When the white business card space opens, right-click it and select "Paste." The image pastes in; drag it into place on the left side of the card with your cursor.

    • 3). Click the "Text" tool, which looks like an "A" and click the white space of the card. If you don't see a toolbar appear, click the "View" menu and select "Text Toolbar." Select a sedate font, such as Times New Roman, and type your name and designation, such as "associate" or "partner." Press the "Enter" key and type your firm. Continue to press the "Enter" key to get to a new line, adding your contact details.

    • 4). Give your card a background color by clicking the "Paint Bucket" tool and selecting one of the colors from the "Color Picker" at the bottom of the screen. Click anywhere in the white space of the card, which fills with color behind your text and graphic.

    • 5). Pull down the "File" menu, click "Save As," type a name for the card and select a place to save it on your computer.

    Using Word

    • 1). Open Word, pull down the "File" menu and select "New." When the "New Document" pane opens on the right side of the screen, type "business card" into the "Search online for" box and click "Go." Scroll through the results, click a preview link and click the "Download" button, opening a page of the cards on the Word workspace.

    • 2). Click your cursor into the top left card and highlight the placeholder text. Type your own name, position, firm, address, website, phone, other contact details and any other information such as "First in class at Harvard Law." Use the text toolbar at the top of the screen to change the words' font, size, position and color.

    • 3). Click once on the placeholder graphic on the card to highlight it, then press the "Delete" key. Pull down the "Insert" menu and select "Picture." If you have your own image to use for the card, click "From File," browse to it and double-click it to bring it up on the card. Otherwise, select "Clip Art" and browse for a term to search for to add to the card.

    • 4). Highlight all of the new text and the graphic on the card with your cursor. Press the "Ctrl" and "C" keys to copy it. Move your cursor into the next card on the page and highlight all of that text and the graphic. Press the "Ctrl" and "V" keys to paste your information directly over the template. Repeat this to fill all of the template cards on the page with your information.

    • 5). Pull down the "File" menu and select "Save As." Give the cards a name and select a place to save them on your computer.
