- 1). Back up all the personal files on your Compaq Presario to an external hard drive or other storage device, then disconnect the external device. Rebuilding will destroy all the data on your computer's hard drive.
- 2). Insert the restore CD that came with your Presario computer. Contact Hewlett-Packard for a replacement disk if you cannot find the CD. You will need to provide the serial number of your machine to obtain a new CD. The serial number is printed on a label attached to the top or side of the computer or on a plate on the rear of the computer.
- 3). Shut down the Presario and restart it. Watch the screen and press a key when you see "Press any key to boot from CD." Verify the Presario model and operating system and click "Next."
- 4). Answer "Yes" when asked if you want to format your hard drive. You will receive several warning messages before the format begins.
- 5). Insert the operating system CD when prompted. Wait for the CD to install your operating system files. The Presario will reboot several times during this process, then one final time when the rebuild process is complete.
- 6). Connect to the Internet and download all new updates from the Microsoft Windows Update website. It will take some time to download and install all of the updates and service packs that were released since your Presario was built.
- 7). Attach your external hard drive or storage device and copy your personal files back to the Presario.
