How to Download Audio from Smart Media to a PC

Media card reader and USB ports & external USB media reader.

Look at your computer. There are a couple of things that need to be determined before any audio files (music, ring tones, alert sounds) are transferred to the computer. Check the front of the computer for a group of four to six slots that vary in width and length. Most modern systems include a media card reader, but a few exceptions (and older computers) may not have this device. If the computer does not have one, an internal media card reader may be purchased and professionally installed at most computer outlets, but the most convenient and hassle-free solution is to buy an external USB media card reader. An external reader sits on your desktop and connects to your computer via the USB port on the front or rear of all computers made since the mid-1990s. Once connected, Windows automatically recognizes the new device and it is immediately ready for use.

      Micro-SD card.

Determine the type of smart media you will be working with. Most audio devices (cell phones, MP3 players) with removable storage use the micro-SD card, but other types may also be used. Refer to the user's manual to determine the media card's type, location, and method of removal for your particular audio device.

Multi-Media Reader found on most modern computers.

Insert the card in the appropriate slot in your media reader (see the next step if you are working with a Micro-SD card). Most smart media cards will have their type printed on the face. Just match up the type with the appropriate slot and slide it in with the sticker label face-up and the gold tabs facing down and in.

      Micro-SD card with SD adaptor.

Make adjustments if you have a micro-SD card, as you will probably not find a slot of the appropriate size. You will need a mini-SD adapter that treats your tiny card as the larger-sized SD card. Check the original packaging of your mini-SD for the adapter. If you do not have one, purchase one from an electronics or computer store. Slide the mini-SD into the adapter's slot with the words facing up and the gold contacts facing down and in. Slide the adapter with the gold contacts down and in into the slot labeled "SD" on your media reader.

    • 5). Open "My Computer" on your desktop (or Start Menu), and you will see a new icon appear labeled with the name if your smart card. In most cases, this is simply a letter (i.e. G:, H:, I:). Open this icon and you should see the files located on your smart card.

    • 6). Locate the audio files. If your card is like the one being worked on, all the audio files will be located in the folder labeled "Music." Simply drag-and-drop these files to the desired location on your computer and the PC will automatically copy them. If you cannot find your files, perform a search on the card or check some of the oddly-named folders. Some portable devices use strange naming conventions as there is no set standard as of yet.
