- 1). Measure the existing cushions before removal. Your existing cushions will act as a guide to the size and depth of the new cushions. Add at least 3 inches to each measurement to give extra room for error. Write down your measurements so you will know how much fabric, foam, and batting you will need.
- 2). Choose durable, yet stylish, upholstery fabric and foam. When choosing to cover your couch cushions, keep in mind indoor furniture might be used frequently, so while its cosmetic appearance and coordination to your existing motif is important, it also is pertinent to consider durability when making fabric choices. Make sure your new foam is similar to the existing foam in terms of thickness and durability.
- 3). Cut your fabric, foam, and batting based on your measurements.
- 4). Cover the foam with the batting, wrapping the batting firmly around the foam.
- 5). Sew the fabric. Take the fabric squares and place them inside out with the seams against each other. Pin the seams together to secure their placement. Sew three sides of the fabric, leaving the last side open.
- 6). Insert the foam through the open side. Turn the newly sewn fabric outside in. Place the batting-covered foam inside the fabric. Be sure the batting is smooth against the foam so the cushion will be free of lumps.
- 7). Sew the remaining fabric or add a zipper. Sew the open side of the cushion to enclose the foam, or you can add a zipper to make the fabric cover removable for washing.
