- 1). Check the type of optical fiber cable for which you require the conversion and note the operating wavelength of the network. Read the corresponding maximum attenuation value in dB/km from the appropriate data sheet.
- 2). Check the power loss in dBm that you wish to convert to km. This may be expressed as a negative number.
- 3). Divide the power loss by the attenuation value from the data sheet. If the answer is negative, multiply by minus 1. For example, if the power loss is minus 24 dBm and the attenuation value is 0.20 dB/km then your answer will be minus 120, which, when multiplied by minus 1, becomes 120.
- 4). Check your result. This is the power loss in dBm converted to the length of cable in km that will result in this level of attenuation.
