- 1). Measure the rooms and all furniture. Write down the measurements for later use. You need the width and length of all rooms and objects.
- 2). Determine how much one square on your grid paper equals. A simplistic conversion is one square equals one foot or half a foot. Draw the outline of the house on a piece of grid paper. Use a ruler to help keep the lines straight. Make hash marks to indicate where the sides of windows are located.
- 3). Draw the lines for the rooms in the house. Count the squares to locate the wall positions and length. Use a ruler to help draw the lines. Leave gaps for open areas, and draw a slightly slanted line in openings with doors. Draw the slant in the direction that the door opens.
- 4). Mark locations for wall outlets, switches and other items, such as wainscoting, on the wall.
- 5). Outline permanent items that stick out in rooms such as counters, closet shelves, bath tubs, commodes and columns.
- 6). Sketch the outline of the furniture pieces to scale on separate grid paper, using the same scale as for the floor plans. Color in the objects based on their general color.
- 7). Cut out the furniture pieces and place them on the house paper in their current locations.
