- Some of the most popular multiplayer PC games belong to genres that were invented and perfected on the PC. Some of these games may not be the best looking, but the game play is what keeps players coming back for more.
- "Counter Strike" is a team-based first-person shooter. Two teams of two (terrorist and counter-terrorist) compete against each other in objective-based games. The team that completes that objective wins that round. Released in 1999, "Counter Strike "originally started out as a modification of the popular video game "Half Life." "Counter Strike" became so popular that the creators of "Half Life," Valve Software, began to distribute the game in retailers. "Counter Strike's" round-based game play has become commonplace in multiplayer-based first-person shooters.
- "Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne" is a real-time strategy game. The one and only expansion to 2003's "Reign of Chaos," "Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne" adds new heroes (one for each race plus additional tavern heroes), new multiplayer maps and clan support for battle.net, its multiplayer matching service. Unlike other real-time strategy games, "Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne" focuses on leveling up heroes, managing small armies and combat on smaller maps. This makes for a very fast-paced game that is based around speed, along with the standard rock-paper-scissors game play found in real-time strategy games. Ideal for gamers who want to get their strategy fix in under 20 minutes.
- "Left 4 Dead 2" is a fast-paced, zombie-based survival horror-action game. "Left 4 Dead 2" doubles the content of the original along with introducing a storyline (which was absent altogether in the original). "Left 4 Dead 2" supports up to four players in its cooperative modes and up to eight players in the competitive modes. Whether players are on the side of the undead or the survivors, teamwork is crucial to the success of the team.
