How to Winterize Windows With Plastic Film

    • 1). Clean the window frame with a damp sponge to remove any dust or grime. Allow the frame to air dry for at least an hour.

    • 2). Roll out a length of double sided tape and cut it with scissors so it is long enough to fit the length of the window. Single, long spans of tape allow for a more secure seal that air can't leak through. Peel the backing off one side and carefully position the tape down the window frame. Don’t smooth it down until you are sure you get it perfectly positioned. When that is done, smooth it down with a plastic putty knife.

    • 3). Cut and position tape similarly on the other three sides. Be sure to get the taped frame pieces as tightly joined at the corners as possible to get a good seal on the plastic. Let the tape adhere for 15 minutes before continuing.

    • 4). Peel the tape backing off one of the upper corners of the window to reveal the adhesive. Continue removing the backing until all the tape is exposed.

    • 5). Unfold and spread out a piece of the shrinkable plastic. Hold the one of the two top corners in each hand and position the plastic sheet over the window. Get at least 1/2-inch of plastic protruding past the tape and smooth the top edge. Rub your finger across the entire top a few times to get it down completely.

    • 6). Pull the plastic taught at one of the top corners and start adhering it down one side about 4 inches. Do the same to the other side, and then alternate sides. Press the plastic down against the tape every 4-inches until about 2 inches from the bottom.

    • 7). Grasp the bottom corners one at a time and smooth them down before tightening the bottom as you stick it to the tape. Go over all four sides a few times pressing with your finger. Leave the plastic alone for approximately 15 minutes.

    • 8). Set a hairdryer on the lowest setting. Hold it approximately 3 inches away from the plastic at one of the top corners and moving it slowly across the plastic horizontally. You should see the wrinkles begin to pull out of it and it get taught. Continue moving back and forth across the plastic as you move down the window. When complete, touch up any areas that seem loose by holding the heat over them for a few seconds.

    • 9). Trim away any excess plastic from the frame using a utility knife, and check the plastic for hold and tightness.
