- 1). Wash glass or hard plastic bottles with hot soapy water. The containers should have tight-fitting caps to seal them completely. Rinse them thoroughly to avoid contaminating the filtered water with soap. Hard plastic containers, such as juice bottles or soda bottles, are an ideal option for this as you reduce the risk of breakage. Milk jugs and similar containers are too porous and break down easily over time. Do not use them for long-term storage.
- 2). Fill the containers with the filtered water. Place the caps on each container and seal them completely. Place a label on each container with the current date.
- 3). Place the sealed containers in a storage area which is cool, dry and secure. Select an area which is unlikely to be immediately impacted by any severe weather or natural disasters.
- 4). Rotate your water storage every six months. Remove the old containers, and replace them with fresh water, labeled clearly. Use the old water for plants and similar purposes so you don't waste it.
