Types

  There are three types of mange that affect dogs: demodectic, cheyletiella and sarcoptic. Each type of mange is caused by mites. Mange in puppies is caused by the Demodex canis mite, and affects puppies aged 3 months to 1 year.
  
  

Effects

  Demodectic mange causes hair to thin around your puppy's eyes, mouth and legs, and can also result in circular bald spots. Demodectic mange in puppies can take up to 3 months to clear and may require a trip to the veterinarian.
  
  

Warning

• 
  
  Persistent mange can develop into hair loss across your puppy's head, body and legs, and is a serious medical condition. If your puppy's hair follicles are clogged, his skin will be sore and could ooze as well.
  
  

Prevention/Solution

• Mitaban Dip
  
  If your puppy's mange does not clear up on its own, seek veterinary help. Your vet can provide you with a medicated shampoo and a topical insecticide that will kill the mange-causing mites. Mitaban Dip is approved by the FDA for mange treatment.
  
  

Considerations

• 
  
  If your puppy is otherwise healthy, she will likely recover from mange on her own. However, treatment is still recommended to speed up the recovery process.
