- Remove all items on top of the counter. Take a dry rag and some denatured alcohol, and thoroughly clean the bathroom countertops. You do not want any leftover dirt, stains, or oils to interfere with the refinishing process. The edges of the sink, walls, and faucets must be shielded from the paint and primer with masking tape.
- Use a palm sander and 120-grit sand paper to sand and texture the countertop surface. Texturing will help the paint cohere to the surface. When finished, wipe off residual dust from sander with a damp wash cloth. Dry completely, then apply the primer. Use a paint roller to cover the majority of the countertop. To get smaller, more detailed areas like corners use a paint brush. Apply one coat, let dry, then apply one more and let it dry.
- Lightly sand one more time after primer has completely dried to ensure the paint will sufficiently adhere to the surface. Remove the dust and apply an acrylic paint. Just as with the primer, use a paint roller for most of the counter, and small paintbrush to get detailed areas. After each application, allow paint to dry completely then sand with 220-grit sand paper. It usually takes two coats of paint to fully refinish a bathroom counterop. Remember to allow paint 48 hours to dry before sanding.
