- Choose useful clothing as well as a pretty outfit or two. Most parents can't have enough onesies, as these make up the majority of a baby's day-to-day clothing needs. Include clothing in sizes ranging up to six months. Newborn clothing is often too small for bigger newborns, and even if it does fit the baby quickly outgrows it. Consider sleeper sacks, socks and baby mitts, which prevent the baby from scratching her face as she sleeps.
- Diapers, wipes, washcloths and bath items are necessities that parents always use and appreciate. If the new mom plans to nurse, include nursing pads or a nursing cover. Bottles, burp cloths and other feeding items are useful additions to a care gift basket. For parents who plan to cloth diaper, consider giving a surplus of diapers or covers in various sizes, or a gift certificate for a diaper service for the new parents as they get used to the diapering routine in the first few weeks after taking the baby home.
- Give a matching crib set, including matching bumpers and sheets. Crib pads are an often overlooked but necessary item. Other appreciated crib items include blankets, mobiles and baby monitors.
- New babies don't need a lot of toys. An infant enjoys a few soft items, such as stuffed rattles, as he begins to grow and become interested in his world. A baby gym or play pad provides entertainment during the baby's first year. An alternative to traditional toys is to begin baby's library. Start with soft books aimed at infants, then give the parents a new book for the library -- keeping the books age-appropriate -- as the baby grows.
