Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota is a limestone rock formation originally carved by water retreating from an ancient sea that covered the area between 30 and 60 million years ago. The canyon area is full of tall rock faces, pine trees, oak trees and wildlife. Access to the canyon is found on Highway 14A and the area is visited by tourists during all seasons of the year. Lodging in the area is diverse, and ranges from chain motels to upscale lodges to quaint bed and breakfasts. - Spearfish Canyon Lodge has seven specialty suites available as well as standard rooms. Specialty suites include extras, such as microwaves, fireplaces, refrigerators and hot tubs. Standard rooms come with two queen-sized beds, table, chair and television.
