- 1). Measure the room you wish to sketch, or determine the size of the room being designed. When drawing layouts, dimensions mean everything; you need accurate measurements in order to calculate the proportional space taken up by objects in the room, such as windows and furniture.
- 2). Measure the objects to be included in the room, and calculate their placement and size on your layout. Use each square on your graph paper to represent a unit of measurement. For instance, if your room measures 14 feet long and 12 feet wide, you may designate one square to equal a foot; your room will be 14 squares by 12 squares. A 6-foot sofa will be six squares long. In the same manner, calculate the approximate placement of each object by measuring its distance from the walls.
- 3). Using a pencil, sketch each object in its proper place; double-check your measurements. Erase and rework your image as necessary, ensuring that everything is where you would like it to be.
- 4). When you feel satisfied with your dimensions, copy your drawing onto a fresh sheet of paper and begin adding details. Depending on your level of artistic ability and the amount of precision your project requires, you can color the objects with different colored pencils or you can sketch the details of the room, giving texture to the carpet and adding dimension to the window sill, for example.
