- 1). In "Bonsai (101 Essential Tips)," author Harry Tomlinson advises watering ficus trees daily in spring, summer and fall. During winter, check the soil daily to determine if your tree needs watering. Place your finger on the soil and press it about half an inch in. If the soil is dry at this level then it is time to water the tree.
- 2). Water your bonsai tree in the evening after sundown. If you water during the day, the water could dry out in a few hours and moisture on the leaves could cause the leaves to scorch.
- 3). Use a hose or a watering can with a long neck to water the bonsai tree. If you are using a hose, make sure it is set to deliver a fine spray. Water the plant from above and make sure the soil is well soaked.
- 4). Water your indoor bonsai tree outside. Let the water drain well from the bonsai pot before you take the plant inside.
