- 1). Deleting unused icons on your desktop is a simple start on the path to optimization. Any files or programs that you don't use are only taking up memory. To get rid of them, highlight the icon by clicking it with the mouse and dragging it to the trash or pressing shift+delete. If you move items to the trash bin, remember to empty it afterward by right-clicking the trash bin icon and selecting "Empty."
- 2). Run a disk check by going to the 'Start' menu and clicking "My Computer." Right-click the C: drive and click "Properties." In the "Properties" box that will pop up, click "Tools." In the "Error-checking" box, click "Check now." In the "Disk Check" dialog box, put a check next to all the boxes, and press "OK." If your computer asks if you want it to perform this check at every boot up, press "OK," and it will run this check for you every time you restart.
- 3). Remove temporary Internet files by going to the "Start" menu and clicking "My Computer." Right-click the C: drive and click "Properties." In the "Properties" box, click "Disk Cleanup" and let the scan run.
- 4). Replace or add more RAM to your computer. Most computers come with less RAM than their capacity, and if you are using most of it, your computer will run slow. You can go to any computer electronics store and ask a customer service employee what kind of RAM will suit your computer.
- 5). Replace the RAM in a desktop by turning off and unplugging the computer and taking off a side panel to the case. Look for the RAM sticks in the computer; they will look just like what you have purchased. Remove the sticks by pushing back any securing clips and gently sliding them out of their slots. Replace the old sticks and secure the new ones. Restarting the computer is the only thing you will need to do for new RAM to be assimilated.
- 6). Replace RAM on a laptop by shutting down the laptop, unplugging the computer and removing the battery. Find the hatch on the underside of the laptop that is marked for RAM. Remove the hatch by unscrewing it or sliding it out. The RAM on the laptop be removed gently and replaced the same way. Restarting the computer is all you have to do after replacing the RAM.
- 7). Blow out all inputs, fans, and holes with canned air. This will help the fans run at proper speeds and let the heat disperse from the computer more effectively.
- 8). Lift your laptop up on some DVD cases or books to increase heat flowing away from the machine. If you're using a desktop, place the tower in an open area where the fans can effectively disperse the heat.
