  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was created in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to provide heightened national security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is one component of Homeland Security and was created in large part to implement airplane safety regulations. The TSA enforces a variety of rules and regulations designed to ensure passenger safety. Individual airlines may impose additional rules.
  
  

Transporting Liquids

• Liquids are permitted in carry-on bags as long as they meet the "3-1-1" rule. Passengers are allowed to bring containers of liquid that are no more than 3.4 ounces in one clear plastic bag, with a limit of one bag per passenger. Liquids in larger containers must be packed in checked luggage. You can declare greater amounts of certain liquids and carry them aboard, such as baby formula and medications.
  
  

Laptop Computers

• Laptop computers are permitted to be carried on the plane but must first pass through an X-ray machine, To make the process easier by being able to keep your laptop in its bag, the TSA created guidelines for "checkpoint friendly" laptop bags. The bag should have a separate laptop-only section that unfolds for easy placement on the X-ray conveyor belt. The separate section should have no extra pockets, snaps, buttons or zippers and should contain only your laptop.
  
  

Travelers with Disabilities

• People who have disabilities are permitted to fly in the same manner as other passengers. However, if they are need of devices such as motorized chairs, the devices will need to be screened by security before the individual is allowed to pass through the checkpoint. Any life-support equipment or other medical aids are also allowed on board.
  
  

Children

• Children who are able to walk unassisted will be requested to pass through the metal detectors on their own. Children who are not old enough to walk must pass through the detector with the aid of an adult. If the detector's alarm sounds, both the adult and child must undergo further screening. Equipment such as strollers must pass through the X-ray machine, provided they will fit.
  
  

Identification

• All passengers age 18 or over must present photo identification before being allowed to board the plane. Acceptable identification includes driver's license, military ID, passport or permanent resident card. Passengers who are unable to furnish acceptable identification may not be permitted to board the plane.
  
  

Prohibited Items

• The TSA has developed a lengthy list of items that are not permitted on airplanes such as firearms and sharp objects. The complete list can be found by visiting TSA.gov.
