- 1). Go to Army-Navy surplus stores and ask for Meals Ready to Eat. MREs are self-contained packages of complete meals with long shelf lives, are issued to soldiers in the field and have entrees, desserts and sides. For meals needing to be heated, MREs include self-heating packs. Army-Navy stores frequently sell MREs by the case at significant savings.
- 2). Locate specialty outdoor sports gear retailers. Go to the backpacking section and find the freeze-dried and dehydrated food packages. These are made to have long shelf lives. For most of these rations, all they require are hot water being poured in the bags to cook the meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner selections are available, as are desserts and sides.
- 3). Collect dry pasta, dry beans and dry rice. Place them in vacuum bags and seal them down to preserve and provide sustenance in the survival food packets. Pasta and rice provide needed carbohydrates while the beans are a good source of needed protein.
- 4). Buy a dehydrator and make your own dehydrated food. Chop up fruits and make your own dried fruits, which are good sources of vitamins and sugars. Slice meats and add spices to make survival jerky sticks. Use a vacuum sealer to keep the food fresh and well-preserved for survival situations.
