- 1). Contact your tax assessor immediately after you've received notice that a tax lien has been filed on your property. Tell the assessor that you believe the lien was filed incorrectly, and ask what the steps are to dispute the lien.
- 2). Bring proof of tax payment to the assessor. You also may bring your installment agreement if you're paying back property taxes. If you pay your taxes through escrow (meaning, your taxes and insurance are paid every month with your mortgage payment, and your lender distributes tax payments on your behalf), contact your lender immediately. Your lender will need to make a payment from your account or will need to provide proof of payment to the assessor.
- 3). Ask the assessor to give you a lien release that shows the tax lien has been removed. Save the release.
- 4). Make all future tax payments on time. Be sure to save your receipts, such as canceled checks or escrow statements from your lender. If you need help paying your property taxes, contact your assessor immediately. You may be able to enter into an installment agreement or charge your taxes on a credit card.
