- 1). Make sure the oven is completely cool before attempting to clean the oven.
- 2). Dump the coals and ash out of the lid and sweep the interior clean with a natural fiber brush that is medium to soft-bristled. If you use a tough bristle or a very abrasive surface like steel wool, you will have to reseason the cast iron.
- 3). Rinse out the interior of the cast iron camp oven with warm water. Do not ever use detergents in cast iron camp ovens. You will have to reseason them. For those of you worrying about sanitation issues, when you heat up the oven beyond 120 degrees Fahrenheit, all of the harmful bacteria and germs are killed.
- 4). Wipe out the oven with a soft cloth dipped in warm water. This will remove all of the loose debris. Allow the oven to dry completely.
- 5). Pour some olive oil on a paper towel. Never use an animal-based oil--they will turn rancid and you will have to thoroughly wash and reseason your camp oven.
- 6). Rub the paper towel with the oil on it around the interior and exterior of the camp oven.
- 7). Allow the oven to sit until it is fully dried and then pack it up or let it sit until the next use.
