- 1). Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive. Restart the computer and choose to boot from the CD-ROM when prompted during startup.
- 2). Press the "R" key to choose the "Repair or Recover" option from the text-based portion of the Windows setup process to enter the Recovery Console.
- 3). Enter the administrator password when prompted. Press "Enter" without entering a password if you did not create an administrator password when installing Windows XP.
- 4). Type the command "expand D:\i386\hal.dl_ C:\windows\system32\hal.dll" at the command prompt. Replace "D:" with the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive if it is different.
- 5). Enter the command "exit" and press "Enter" to exit Recovery Console. Remove the CD-ROM from the drive and allow the computer to boot into Windows XP.
