Kitchens are typically built around the concept of the work triangle, which is defined as the movement a cook makes to the refrigerator, stove and sink. U-shaped kitchens accommodate this work triangle by building to the needs and work style of the cook. Include extra options for storage and take a look at natural light to create a fresh, bright space. - Design the U-shaped kitchen with a particular person in mind by analyzing the work style of the resident cook. For instance, a left-handed cook might prefer the refrigerator on the left, the sink in the middle and the cooktop to the right or vice versa. Have the cook spend time visiting kitchen design stores, home remodeling centers and even model homes to see the variety of possibilities. Allow him to analyze each design option according to how he might use it---the ideal U-shaped design may actually be a combination of ideas. Carry a digital camera and take snapshots of favorite U-shaped layouts.
- Add a rolling storage and cutting board cart for extra cooking space. Carts can be stored in a pantry or closet when not in use or be placed at the end of a counter if space allows. Kitchen supply stores, home remodeling centers and specialty container and storage stores provide a variety of cart choices. When remodeling or building the U-shaped kitchen from the ground up, include a special rolling cart design in the cabinet maker's contract. To make this cart one-of-a-kind, design it to fit the style and look of the U-shaped kitchen by incorporating the same wood, laminate, metal or stone found in the new kitchen plan.
- A U-shaped kitchen has the potential to be a dark, gloomy spot because of the surrounding cabinets. Adding cabinets covered in dark colored woods or laminates can make the occupants feel claustrophobic and the space look much smaller than it really is. Choose medium- to light-colored woods and neutral colored laminates to lighten the kitchen's appearance. Consider adding a skylight or a large window in the kitchen for a lighter look. Incorporate metal and glass surfaces or appliances to bounce light around the room and give it some sparkle.
