- 1). Lay the area rug flat on any flat surface. If the edges are curling up, turn it over and press down to get it as flat as possible. Unroll the gripper pad on top of the rug. You'll notice that it's rubbery and slightly sticky.
- 2). Cut the gripper pad to 3 inches less than the size of the area rug with a utility knife. This will prevent edges of the padding from showing when the rug is placed on top of it.
- 3). Place the piece of gripper pad on the carpet where you want the area rug to go. Cut pieces of double-stick carpet tape and stick them on the edges of the carpet padding. If the area rug is an oval, cut several shorter pieces to accommodate the curve.
- 4). Arrange the area rug lightly on top of the gripper pad and tape. Position the rug so that you can't see either the gripper pad or the tape on any side. Press down along all the edges to secure the tape to the carpet.
